Wicked Wisdom Frontwoman Talks About Women In Metal
June 22, 2006
Charlie Steffens of Knac.com recently conducted an interview with Wicked Wisdom frontwoman Jada Pinkett-Smith (actress and wife of actor/rapper Will Smith). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

Knac.com: Alright, so aside from Otep, what singers were your biggest influences?

Jada: "God, we had a lot of support from all the bands but I would have to say, Mat [Bruso] from Bury Your Dead, would pull me up the most, would give me pointers and kinda help me out with stuff. I remember Candace [Kucsulain] from Walls Of Jericho…"

Knac.com: Oh, she's great!

Jada: "I love her, I'm so glad she's doing Ozzfest this year, She's such a cool person and I remember Candace coming on board, she came to one of our Ozzfest shows, she spent some time with me, she was giving me the whole run down and giving me a lot of pointers you know what I'm saying? We went to go see one of her shows in San Francisco, we went to see one of her shows…and but I would say, Candace, and um, Mastodon, were very supportive of us."

Knac.com: Did you get a chance to talk to Angela [Gossow] from Arch Enemy?

Jada: "I did talk to Angela a bit. We didn't see her much, but I introduced myself and every time she came out we would watch them play. Angela was the quietest person on Ozzfest…but a very, very sweet girl."

Knac.com: You can wear two different suits; You can be quiet and reflective, like now in your tour bus, then you can go up onstage and just be a fuckin' monster…

Jada: "(laughs) Exactly. It's so funny, because most of the bands at Ozzfest were so laid back. It's amazing to see that transformation in all the bands …leaving backstage and going onstage. It's two different energies. Every band that was on Ozzfest last year was just great and really wonderful to us. And I know it was probably really hard for them, because it was just like, 'What is this? We got Jada out here? This is bizarre.' But everybody was so cool and we had such a good time. We really did. As I Lay Dying was really supportive, too."

Soil Perform 'Halo' with Jada Pinkett Smith: Video Available
June 19, 2006
A video clip of Soil performing the song "Halo" live at the Download festival at Donington Park, England on June 9 — featuring a guest appearance by Wicked Wisdom frontwoman, actress Jada Pinkett Smith (wife of Will Smith) — has been posted online at YouTube.com.

Soil's latest album, True Self, was released in early May via DRT Entertainment. The follow-up to 2004's Redefine was recorded and mixed at Bomb Shelter studios in Los Angeles, California with producer Ulrich Wild (Static-X, Taproot). The CD is the group's first to feature singer A.J. Cavalier, who previously fronted the California-based Diesel Machine (also featuring ex-Damageplan frontman Patrick Lachman on guitar). The band's original vocalist, Ryan McCombs, has since joined the Texas act Drowning Pool.

HOME TOWN: Los Angeles
Jada Pinkett Smith (vocals)
Pocket Honore (lead guitar)
Phillip "Fish" Fisher (drums)
Rio Lawrence (bass guitar)
Cameron Graves (rhythm guitar & keys)

More than two years ago Wicked Wisdom set out on a fearless journey to create music that defies boundaries and convention. Fronted by accomplished actor Jada Pinkett Smith and backed by a live band whose resume displays a wealth of live and recorded projects, Wicked Wisdom has given birth to a sound that cannot be confined in a single genre. Seamlessly fusing the screaming guitars of heavy rock, driving drums of speed metal and unmistakably locked grooves of funk, with a melodic vocal style that is at the same time fierce and vulnerable, Wicked Wisdom tap into the blood line that fuels the human condition. This powerful music will be the soundtrack to revolutions as it pulses with an appeal so broad the typical restraints of our societies fall by the wayside.

When Wicked Wisdom's Music Director Pocket Honore tuned down his Guitar and started writing new material with recent addition Cameron Graves A.K.A. Young Beige the two realized they were creating a truly explosive sound. This new sound combined with Smith's searingly honest and revealing vocals proved the band was on the right path. The addition of Fishbone founding member Phillip "Fish" Fisher on the drums pushed the sound even deeper into the depths of a hard, dark soundscape. Bass player Rio Lawrence's extreme stage presence can only be topped by his ability to fly through his booming bass riffs with an easy aggression. Rhythm Guitarist and keyboard player Cameron Gravesplays the crucial role of maintaining this band's hard melody while accompanying Pocket's wild guitar style.

As we all know there is only one place to test a new band, the live stage. Live, Wicked Wisdom eclipses the sum of its parts. Jada Pinkett Smith is, of course, a confident performance artist. Although few could foresee how brightly she would shine, her stage persona fills the venue and demands attention. Live, the other members of the band do more than back Jada; they murder their parts like the world depends on it. It was not long before the Wicked Wisdom live show garnered major buzz and caught the attention of influential ears, including Ozzfest tour organizer Sharon Osbourne.

"I went to see Wicked Wisdom play last April in a tiny (Los Angeles) club at midnight, let me tell you, I was blown away. When you see and hear Jada with her band it's apparent that she has nothing but love and respect for this genre of music. I totally respect that the band wants to pay their dues playing the second stage on Ozzfest." - Sharon Osbourne

The invitation to perform at Ozzfest comes at a perfect time for the band Wicked Wisdom and they had an amazing summer on the tour. WW is set to release its self titled debut on 100% Womon Records & Suburban Noize Records on February 21, 2006...

"Like it or not we're coming for that Ass." - Wicked Wisdom
