HOME TOWN: Ventura, CA
Kevin van Ouwekerk (vocals)
Matt Lafferty (guitar)
Steve Hur (bass)
Nate Freedman(drums)

“I can’t stand people perpetrating negativity” claims This Moment guitarist Matt Lafferty.  When reminded that most of his brethren in the metal-core scene are not known for their abundance of positivity, he simply says “so, shining a little light in a dark place can only help.”  This Moment like their moniker is about living in the here and now and embracing each moment.  Their music is just as immediate with brutal sonics meshing metal abrasion with more melodic moments.  Lafferty claims that it doesn’t matter if each song sounds different as long as it has a positive message.  The band’s new album Star Parallel is an ambitious concept album that at first glance may be hard pressed to find the positive in.

Based on the true story of lovers who backpack through Europe where one of them meets a tragic end after falling through a window to his death.  The story follows the woman through her grief, search for meaning and eventually the theme of love enduring past death and the idea of eternal life.  Commenting on the title Lafferty says “As opposed of the idea of Star Crossed lovers that Shakespeare wrote of, these are Parallel lovers who continue to move in the same direction through life and death though they are not together.”  Produced by Paul Miner who has done seminal work with such acts as Atreyu, Thrice and Death By Stereo the music is as epic as the subject matter.  This Moment formed right after high school and includes Lafferty, Kevin van Ouwekerk (vocals), Steve Hur (bass) and Nathan Freedman (drums).  Coming from Ventura County, CA the band developed their sound over time and a following.  Gaining a buzz, California label, Uprising approached This Moment and released their first proper album Finding A Voice In The Dark (2005).  The album landed squarely on the ears of press including Outburn Magazine, who said that the band have a “well honed knack for writing moodily melodic yet passionately brutal songs.”  National tours followed with artists such as Red Knife Lottery, Red Death and Countdown To Life as well as shows with My Chemical Romance, He Is Legend and Silverstein.  Taking their knocks shows ranged from amazing to a show in Texas where Lafferty claims “I knew we were in trouble when we set up our merch next to a sign that read Live Nude Girls and a metal pole.”
