The Downfall Of Metal Is Here, And It's Name Is Commissioner
July 1, 2010
Ok, so I already don't like Disfiguring The Goddess or Abominable Putridity... and I never cared for Burning The Masses either. What ties all these bands together? The one and only Cameron Argon, aka 'Big Chocolate'. What's to say about him? Well for starters I don't think he's some fucking musical genius at the age of 19 just because he can do some gurgly death metal vocals that plenty of other frontmen can do just as well and in most cases better, or because he can revamp songs with scratches, samples and 'dubstep' and call them 'remixes'. Unlike other websites that see a need to consistently kiss his not so chocolate ass, this site isn't about to join that bandwagon. Sorry, but we're just not asskissing, cockhopping trendwhores here at Loudside.

Anyhow, if you've heard this new Electrocore 'project' that is comprised of Suicide Silence frontman Mitch Lucker and Cameron Argon, you already know that this is most likely going to be the next trend to come along and take Metal as we know it to the worst possible level of exploitative commercialization that it's ever endured in it's 35+ year history. Glam Metal was terrible and Nu Metal was also pretty horrid, but both of those pale in comparison to what this pop culture soaked project will do if it catches on... and I'm sure it will too, which is the worst part about it.

My take on it: This is not the mindblowing industrial metal genius that Trent Reznor brought us so many years ago with works like the 'Broken' EP, the remixed 'Fixed' EP or 'The Downward Spiral'. Not a fucking chance. This is nothing more than a hodge podge of sounds, samples, and distorted vocal performances all blended together to make something that some might consider to be 'music'... to me it just sounds like some shit that might be played in a European club, sans the distorted electrodeathmetal vocals. Harsh? Maybe. But really, unlike most people I know, I take my Metal a little bit more seriously than this. Remixing was meant for Rap and Pop. Metal has always been a separate entity that has managed to maintain respectability amongst it's vast fanbase because it never played into trends. Now I see this come along and it just sickens me...

Anyhow, for those of you scenekids out there who are fans of both Lucker and Argon and you're for some reason not already creaming your shorts over this... head on over to the band's Official Myspace page at http://www.myspace.com/commissionermusic to check out the track "Consume." Oh, and be sure to keep checking back for announcements on guest vocal appearances, as there are rumors abound that this project will feature guest performances from some rather prominent extreme metal vocalists. Yeah, you heard that here first...

Underground. Where else would you expect to find the true blood and guts of the extreme metal scene? The filthiest, most brutal bands dishing out the most intense punishment are here, unfettered by here-today-gone-tomorrow trends or the temptation to conform to some notion of what a metal band should be. Suicide Silence, an astonishingly well-developed five-piece from Riverside, CA, are a true product of that always thriving underground, a band single-mindedly focused on creating rabidly heavy and aggressive music.

Suicide Silence started in late 2002 as a side project for its members who were all involved in other local bands at the time. Things didnt get serious, however, until 2004, when the current lineup was solidified. Early on we were slower and sludgier, explains drummer Josh Goddard, but through a few member changes the sound became more powerful and energetic. This mix of musicians brought together their influencesdeath metal, grindcore, black metal, hardcore, doomand combined them into songs that are complex without being mystifying, and savagely fast and explosive without becoming a featureless blur.

Their debut 5-song EP for Third Degree Records is a brutal testament to the sort of damage Suicide Silence is capable of inflicting. Though definitely rooted in what Goddard calls a fast-paced death metal style, it defies that genres sometimes predictable conventions, striving instead for something more unique. The songs are dynamic and crushing, shifting effortlessly from insane grind chaos into total molten sludge, with plenty of dynamic twists and turns along the way. Vocalist Mitch Lucker screams, growls and grunts over an ungodly guitar assault, while the bands surgically precise rhythm section handles the disorienting time signatures and snail-paced grooves with equal efficiency.

It is a sound that, though well-manifested on their EP, is devastating live. Suicide Silences breakdowns cause havoc in the pit, their blast-beats are neck-snapping and there is a palpable sense of barely controlled pandemonium when they play live. We dont hold back, says Goddard, and we try to give the crowd a show rather than standing around watching the moshpit and acting tough. The reputation theyve staked as a fearsome live act has brought them the opportunity to play with bands as diverse as God Forbid, Impaled, Bury Your Dead and Between the Buried and Me. And touring fervently in support of every release is a given.

Suicide Silence may be a product of the burgeoning metal underground in the U.S., but their goals are far from modest. Without pandering to trends, or riding some scenes coattails, the band always wants to move forward, wherever it takes them. We never want to stop improvingas a band, as individual musicians, as songwriters and as performers, says Goddard. We want to make sure that every album we put out and every show we play is better than the last.
