September 2, 2009
The members of Legendary Punk band, Pennywise, have announced that Zoli Teglas, front man for OC hardcore/punk band Ignite will be filling in on vocals during the band’s set on the 2009 Smokeout Festival at the San Manuel Amphitheatre in San Bernadino, CA October 24th, as they begin their search for a new singer.

The two day Smokeout Festival will take place on October 23 and 24 and marks the seminal Hermosa Beach punk band’s first major show since Pennywise singer Jim Lindberg and the band parted ways last month after 19 years together.

will be playing on a lineup that includes such acts as Slipknot, Deftones, Cypress Hill, Kottonmouth Kings, Bad Brains, Method Man/Red Man, a recently reunited Sublime (performing with their new singer, Rome) and many more.

As a former tour mate and a longtime friend and fan, Pennywise’s Fletcher Dragge says Teglas is a natural choice to help the band out during this transitional period. Dragge explains, "As everybody knows, Jim has left the band and we're looking for a new singer. For the time being our friend Zoli has agreed to fill in for Jim for a couple shows to avoid having to cancel them while we look for a permanent replacement."

is looking forward to playing with Pennywise and their hometown So Cal fans adding, “I'm stoked to be singing these upcoming shows with Pennywise. I'm a huge fan of the band and am super grateful to share the stage with my long time friends Fletcher, Byron, and Randy.“

Pennywise Family Suffers Another Loss
April 13, 2009
Sadly, the Pennywise family has suffered another loss. On Sunday, April 5, 2009, Kristian Dragge, little brother of Pennywise lead guitarist Fletcher Dragge, tragically passed away at the young age of 39. He left behind his fiancée, Cindy Linn Groeneweg, and their 1-month old baby girl, Avery Nycole Dragge, as well as his mother Karen Dragge.

The following is from older brother Fletcher Dragge:

My brother Kristian has been a member of the South Bay punk rock scene since 1980 and was at one time the guitar player in the infamous Smut Peddlers. He was a legend in the punk rock community and was well know for his hell-raising antics, along with his fierce loyalty to friends and family. He will be greatly missed by everyone. He has been a huge part of the Pennywise family since Day One.

I remember him helping me hang the carpet to soundproof the garage that we formed Pennywise in. I also remember him lugging our equipment from gig to gig, starting mosh pits, as well as the fight he got into the very first time Pennywise ever played live. It was a backyard party in Redondo Beach. It was about four songs into the set when he was jumped by three guys. We all stopped playing, dropped our guitars and jumped in to help him, just like he would have done for any of us. That’s what Pennywise has always been about, taking care of family. That’s why we are setting up a trust fund for his month old baby girl Avery Nycole, in order to assure that she has everything she’ll ever need growing up.

Any donations at this time would be greatly appreciated. There is no amount too small, anything will help. Thanks to everyone for the outpouring of love and support in this time of need, it has been overwhelming.

Love your brother Fletcher.....Jim, Byron, and Randy.

The charity on behalf of Avery Nycole Dragge will be set up shortly in her name. More details to come.

Pennywise To Co-Headline Jagermeister Tour
March 26, 2009
Jägermeister is teaming up with legendary American punk band, Pennywise and dub rock trio, Pepper for this year’s spring Jägermeister Music Tour. The tour kicks off on April 13th in Seattle, Washington.

Pennywise ( is one of the most significant bands to emerge from Southern California punk’s second wave. The current line-up, which has remained constant since 1996, consists of Jim Lindberg (vocals), Fletcher Dragge (guitar), Randy Bradbury (bass) and Byron McMackin (drums). Formed in 1988 in Hermosa Beach, California, Pennywise have released nine-full length studio albums, one live album, two extended plays and one DVD. Their most recent studio album is 'Reason to Believe', which was released to over 500,000 fans for free through a limited-time offering from their new label, MySpace Records. The critically acclaimed album was also sold physically and digitally the world over. "The Western World", the first single from this watershed album, became the most successful single of the band’s storied career.

Pepper will rejoin the Jägermeister Music Tour once again to feature their fifth studio album, 'Pink Crustaceans and Good Vibrations', and to support their forthcoming live release, 'Kona Gold', due in April 2009. Both albums exemplify the band at their most eclectic and capture the essence of the Kona Boys decade of exploits living on the mainland, while exposing them as seasoned veterans of rock. 'Pink Crustaceans and Good Vibrations' is the band’s first endeavor under the umbrella of LAW Records, their own record label, in association with Controlled Substance Sound Labs/MRI distribution. The forthcoming live album, 'Kona Gold', reunites the band with surf/skate vanguard Volcom Entertainment for the latest release which features Pepper live in August of 2009 at Boulder, Colorado’s intimate Fox Theatre. The Pepper trio consists of Bret Bollinger (vocals/bass), Kaleo Wassman (vocals/guitar) and Yesod Williams (drums/vocals).

Pepper has sold over 400,000 records independently and enjoyed two top 20 singles- "Give it Up –(Dirty Hot Sex)" from 2002’s 'Kona Town', and "No Control" from 2007’s 'No Shame'. Their music has appeared in many movies, television and video game soundtracks and they have a number of album tracks appearing on the Billboard “Hot Modern Rock Tracks” chart.

“I grew up listening to Pennywise in Kona because they would always be featured on Taylor Steele surf videos,” says Yesod Williams, drummer for Pepper. “It was our soundtrack we’d listen to while heading to the beach. Co-headlining this tour with them is a milestone, then you get Jägermeister involved and the party will never end!”

“After 15 years of paying for Jägermeister shots, it will be nice to finally get a couple on the house” said Fletcher Dragge, guitarist for Pennywise.

Jägermeister is thrilled to be once again to be working with Pepper,” said Bill Henderson, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Advertising for the Sidney Frank Importing Company. “Having both Pennywise and Pepper on the same bill is something we’ve been dreaming about for a long time.”

The Tour will rock through the end of May and each show will be rounded out with a local Jägermeister sponsored band. On the road since 2002, The Jägermeister Music Tour, now produced by GMR Entertainment, has become THE rock show to see. For less than $30 a ticket, fans not only have the opportunity to experience a great show, but also have a chance to snag some great Jägermeister prizes and giveaways like JägerMusic compilation CDs, as well as plenty of Jägermeister shirts, hats and more. R.I.P. Dartis McMackin, Mother Of Pennywise's Byron McMackin
January 6, 2009
Sunday night, January 4, Dartis Marie McMackin, mother to Pennywise drummer Byron McMackin, passed away. Known around her Lawndale, California neighborhood as the funny little lady who proudly wore her Pennywise T-shirt to the grocery store, Dartis will be greatly missed. Byron and the rest of the band are grateful for your support in this time of sorrow.

The following post appeared on the MySpace page of band friends Roadrash and Yuka:

Our condolences go out to the McMackins and everyone else who knew Dartis. She was a funny little lady that loved her kids and was very proud of them as well. She would always glow when she talked of Byron's or Bubba's bands. She was very supportive of her sons. She lived close by to me and I would always see her walking to the store with her PW shirts on. I always thought that was rad.

Dartis was always more than nice to me and I never heard her have a bad word for anyone. She gave me a Pennywise wristband for Christmas and now that bracelet means a lot more to me. Just writing this is a real bummer and hurts.

Much Love from the Rodriguez Family to the McMackins. Bubba and Byron have shown alot of people a good time around here for years, Pay them back by showin' some love and support in their time of need.

Love you guys!

Mike and Yuka

Roadrash & Yuka

We here at Loudside send our deepest condolences to Byron and the McMackin Family on the loss of Byron's Mother Dartis.

HOME TOWN: Hermosa Beach, CA
Vocals - Jim Lindberg
Guitar - Fletcher Dragge
Bass - Randy Bradbury
Drums - Byron McMackin

Pennywise formed in 1988 in the south bay of Los Angeles in the same small coastal community of Hermosa Beach that produced three of the most infamous hardcore punk bands of all time, Black Flag, the Circle Jerks and the Descendents. The four band members, guitarist Fletcher Dragge, original bass player Jason Thirsk, drummer Byron McMackin and vocalist Jim Lindberg, began playing local backyard keg parties to increasing crowds, and with the help of friend Marc Theodore of Theologian Records, recorded a five song E.P. A Word from the Wise. A college radio DJ liked what he heard and gave it to Brett Gurewitz, guitarist and songwriter for L.A. punk legends Bad Religion, who was also starting his own label, Epitaph Records. Epitaph was already putting out Bad Religion albums as well as those of hardcore acts NOFX, Insted, and Down By Law. The band gave Brett a ghetto blaster recording of some new songs and he signed them to their first record deal. The result was their heralded, eponymous 1991 self-titled debut which immediately struck a chord with hardcore fans and action sports enthusiasts alike. In defiance of grunge, the disc helped to define the then-emerging West Coast punk movement. Astoundingly, 1993's Unknown Road sold a few hundred thousand copies and rather typically at the height of the punk resurgence of 1994 the major labels came calling. But the four-piece elected to stay put and released another Epitaph smash with 1995s About Time. When the tragic death of Thirsk the next year put the future of the collective in serious doubt, they rallied and regrouped with new bassist Randy Bradbury for Full Circle. The popularity of Pennywise continued to swell as the 20th Century ended, first with the success of 1999's Straight Ahead, followed by the riotous 2000 concert disc Live at the Key Club and the groups highly praised 2001 disc Land of the Free? An ensuing tour was highlighted by a sell-out gig at the 14,000-seat Long Beach Arena. After taking a year off for introspection, the group reemerged stronger than ever in 2003 as evidenced by the glowing accolades From The Ashes received. In early 2005, as Epitaph reissued remastered, content enhanced versions of the groups first four albums, the band reconvened to craft what would ultimately become The Fuse. After performing the more shows worldwide than theyve played in recent years to support The Fuse, including a string of sold out House of Blues shows in L.A. and Orange County, the band again headlined the Vans Warped Tour in 2007, an entity they and a handful of other influential artists help turn into the longest running and one of the most successful American Music Festivals. As of now the band is hard at work on their yet to be titled next album, scheduled for a march 2008 release.
