Evile Cover Pantera Track For Dimebag Tribute
December 4, 2009
British thrashers Evile recently recorded a Pantera track for the upcoming Dimebag Darrell tribute album, which will be released on the cover of the 200th issue of the UK's Metal Hammer magazine.

The special CD and magazine are being released to coincide with the five-year anniversary of Dimebag's passing, and will be available in shops on December 16th.
Alongside various other well-known bands such as Machine Head, Evile were asked to record a song as a tribute to the late guitarist. Evile recorded a cover of the track "Cemetary Gates", and this tragically turned out to be the band's last recording before the untimely death of their own bassist, Mike Alexander, who passed away on October 5th while on tour in Sweden.

A behind-the-scenes video - the last video filmed with Mike - of Evile recording the track at Parlour Studios with producer Russ Russell can be found below.

Evile
lead guitarist Ol Drake comments:
"The day we got the call from our manager, Julie Weir, saying Metal Hammer have asked us to pay tribute to Dimebag Darrell by covering a Pantera song, we couldn't have been more excited and honoured. I mean, how many more bands are there more worthy of paying tribute to the man? With us all being fans of Pantera, we swiftly said yes. Mike though was the biggest Pantera fan. He'd seen them years ago and absolutely worshipped Dimebag.

"After Dime got killed, Mike couldn't listen to "Cemetary Gates" anymore. He'd always ask us to skip the track in the car/van/bus because it was too much for him. So when we chose to do the track it was tough for Mike, but I'm glad he did it. It turned out to be the last song he recorded, which to me is a strangely "appropriate" tribute to him and Dimebag. I remember him nearing the verge of tears whilst I was doing the tremolo bends at the end of the track.

"We hope Pantera/Dimebag fans find this a fitting tribute from us, as we're simply fans ourselves who've been given this rare honour."

Metal Hammer
editor Alexander Milas comments:

"I was genuinely over the moon when Evile volunteered to produce a track for our upcoming Dimebag tribute, a stunningly rendered cover of Pantera's classic 'Cemetary Gates'. So when the truly tragic news of Mike Alexander's all-too-premature departure from this world hit the office, the tragic irony wasn't lost on me or anyone here that Mike Alexander's tribute to the immortal legacy of Dimebag would also be a final testament to his own impeccable musicianship and commitment to the music we love.

"To understate the case slightly, it's a very special track indeed, and we're honoured that it's a part of our upcoming tribute collection. Rest in peace Dimebag, and rest in peace Mike Alexander."

The Dimebag Darrell tribute album contains the following tracks:
01. Zakk Wylde - "Suicide Note Pt. 1"
02. Machine Head - "Fucking Hostile"
03. Malefice - "I'm Broken"
04. Avenged Sevenfold - "Walk"
05. Evile - "Cemetery Gates"
06. Five Finger Death Punch - "A New Level"
07. Biohazard - "Mouth For War"
08. Sylosis - "Strength Beyond Strength"
09. Chimaira - "Slaughtered"
10. Unearth - "Sandblasted Skin"
11. Throwdown - "Becoming"
12. Kiuas - "This Love"
13. This Is Hell - "Rise"

Biography
YEAR FORMED: 1982
HOME TOWN: Texas
MEMBERS:
Phil Anselmo - Vocals
"Dimebag" Darrell Abbott - Guitar
Rex Brown - Bass
Vinnie Paul - Drums

Critics writing about Pantera fall over themselves in search of adjectives to describe the fiercely independent foursome: "Boot kicking" "A Metal massacre" "Crushing" "Searing" - the list goes on and on. Log onto the numerous websites manned by rabid and loyal fans, and youll find chat rooms filled with their own testaments of faith to the band: "They never sold out." "Theyre as heavy as shit." "They always speak their mind." "They dont give a flying fuck about any of the others." But ask Philip Anselmo, the charismatic, often merciless frontman of Pantera about his take on their success and you get the true, living, breathing definition of this uncompromising phenomenon. "Weve survived every fucking trend. Heavy metal, grunge metal, funk metal, rap metal and were still here. We put everyone on notice that we dont fuck around. Our fans know were true right down to the fucking core." Now, with Reinventing The Steel, their first studio album in four years, Pantera can once again let their music do the talking, and, as one writer has already noted about the band: "You can hear them coming a mile away." The new disc, following on the heels of 1997s gold-selling live opus, Official Live: 101 Proof, reverberates with a depth and intensity that secures Panteras rep as the cream of modern metal. "We took more time on this album, much more time," says Vinnie. The album was crafted in their own home studio in Texas, with the band also anointing Vinnie and Dimebag Darrell as sole producers on this one. Terry Date, who has helped guide their four other studio albums, agreed it was time to let Vinnie and Dimebag fly solo on this effort. "He was real cool about it," says Vinnie. "This just seemed like a natural progression to let us have a go at it. We were able to concentrate and work at a steadier pace, going in for a couple of days a week. It gave us a better perspective on what we were trying to achieve." And though Vinnie is reluctant to describe the songs on Reinventing The Steel, Phils riveting bolts of passionate, in-your-face vocals are again faithfully discharged under the familiar Pantera squall of Dimebags guitars, Vinnies drums, and Rexs deft bass playing. "It was great having Vinnie and Dimebag producing," says Phil. "We were able to come in and do our thing with none of the pressures. 100% bullshit proof. The evidence is in the music. Weve been through so much together you can just feel the energy that went into making this album." Soulfully brutal tracks like "Revolution Is My Name," and "Well Grind That Axe For A Long Time," pulse with the restless angst fans have come to expect, but soar, as well, under the steady hands of Vinnie and Dime. "Well Grind That Axe is in a way, our motto," says Phil. "Well keep fucking kicking ass, giving our all, until we cant fucking do it anymore. Our fans can breathe fucking easy were back." As if they ever left. Panteras incredible rise to the top of the metal heap has been nothing short of miraculous when you consider theyve made their historic climb with virtually no radio support or MTV exposure. With 4 platinum albums under their belt, 3 gold home videos and 2 Grammy nominations, Pantera are just beginning to garner the recognition they deserve. Relentless touring since 1990s breakthrough album Cowboys From Hell, has seen them go from local Texas phenoms to mortifying trailblazers of the legendary Ozzfest. Touring with their idols was one of the highlights of Panteras career. One of the most hellraising songs on the new disc, "Yesterday Dont Mean Shit," was penned on their most recent run on the Black Sabbath Reunion Tour. "It was the first song written for the new album," says Vinnie. "I think it establishes the code." That code has held Pantera well through what many consider their classic album, 1992s Vulgar Display Of Power, to 1994s #1 Billboard debut Far Beyond Driven, to their most recent studio effort 1996s The Great Southern Trendkill. (TGST was the first album recorded at their custom built Texas studio.) "It makes all the difference in the world," says Vinnie. "We totally control our own destiny now. And thats just the way we want it." The bands relentless touring and fierce dedication to their fans have inoculated them against the usual trappings that have brought down other metal bands, making them the standard-bearers for integrity minded rock. A crown that came naturally, says Vinnie: "We dont ever try to be anything we arent. The bond between us and our fans cant be broken because they see themselves up there when we play. You can never fake that."
