Satyricon's 'Black Crow On A Tombstone' To Premiere On MTV2
January 24, 2009
Norwegian extreme metal band Satyricon’s brand new music video – for the song “Black Crow on a Tombstone” – will make its MTV2 premiere this weekend as part of the network’s long running “Headbangers Ball” program. The song will kick off the show and is the roll out track from the highly influential outfit’s seventh studio album, 'The Age of Nero', which was released in North America on January 13 via Koch Records.

Satyricon is currently in the midst of a massive North American tour in support of 'The Age of Nero'. The band is laying waste to stages alongside Cradle of Filth as part of a 33 city trek that is scheduled to run through February 28 in Philadelphia, PA. A full listing of upcoming Satyricon tour dates is listed below.

Largely written in a remote cabin in the Norwegian mountains by headman Satyr, 'The Age of Nero' features eight of the most ashen, yet fascinating songs in Satyricon’s critically acclaimed history. From the unstoppable urgency that drips from "Black Crow On A Tombstone" to the epic frenzy of "Die By My Hand" on through to the bleak nihilism of album closer "Den Siste", 'The Age of Nero' dispatches both rocking blackness and a chilling sonic intensity.

Recorded in Los Angeles’ Sound City Studios (Metallica, Slayer) with Satyr acting as producer and “EvilJoe Baresi (Tool, Saviours, Queens of the Stone Age) twisting the knobs, 'The Age of Nero' is a brazen tour de force. In a notable departure from the band’s previous way of working, the guitars have been seriously downtuned, adding to the raw power of the record’s sound. Drummer Frost’s cyclonic percussion defines the austere atmosphere of the album as much as Satyr's pronounced guitar work. 'The Age of Nero' album art has been posted online and can be viewed below.

Satyricon Signs With Koch, New Album Due In January
November 17, 2008
Highly influential extreme metal band, Satyricon, has signed a North American recording deal with Koch Records. The revered Norwegian outfit will release its seventh studio album, 'The Age of Nero', on January 13, 2009.

From the time of its formation in 1990, Satyricon has consistently created dark, compelling music wrought with blackened melodies and Scandinavian occult themes. Beginning with the release of the band’s debut – 1993’s 'Dark Medieval Times'Satyricon has scorned trends and abhorred tried and tested genre stereotypes, always putting its music first, often times as both a surprise and challenge to the listener.

Largely written in a remote cabin in the Norwegian mountains by headman Satyr, 'The Age of Nero' features eight of the most ashen, yet fascinating songs in Satyricon’s critically acclaimed history. From the unstoppable urgency that drips from the roll out cut 'Black Crow On A Tombstone' to the epic frenzy of 'Die By My Hand' and through to the bleak nihilism of album closer 'Den Siste', 'The Age of Nero' dispatches both rocking blackness and a chilling sonic intensity.

When asked to comment on 'The Age of Nero', Satyr stated, "Everything that we do in Satyricon is built around the music itself. That means that our artwork and visuals are chosen or created to function well with the music – either to emphasize elements in the music or to contribute to a sense of totality. The layout for 'The Age of Nero' is truly a fine piece of art; everything from the pictures chosen to the fonts and colors of the letters are carefully picked in order to feel right for this album and its general atmosphere. The album title has multiple references to subjects that on some level pertain to the album itself; ‘Nero’ is a metaphor for darkness but also for destructive elements in mankind that threaten to bring down an empire. The ‘Age of Nero’ refers to Satyricon as that famous piece of literature depicts scenes from Nero’s Rome, but it also refers to our own time and the threat of downfall that is again mirrored in the apocalyptic feel of our music. It all neatly comes together."

The final track listing for 'The Age of Nero' is as follows:
1.) Commando
2.) The Wolfpack
3.) Black Crow on a Tombstone
4.) Die By My Hand
5.) My Skin is Cold
6.) The Sign of the Trident
7.) Last Man Standing
8.) Den Siste

The brand new music video for the song “Black Crow on a Tombstone” has been posted online and is available for viewing now at this location. Additionally, Satyricon graced the cover of the November 1, 2008 issue of the UK’s Kerrang!. Check out the magazine cover posted above.

Satyricon will launch a North American tour in support of 'The Age of Nero' beginning January 15 in Sayreville, NJ. The band will hit the road alongside Cradle of Filth for a 33 city trek that is scheduled to run through February 28 in Philadelphia, PA.

These are heady days for those of us who wear our devotion to metal like a badge of honour. The deafening beast of the dark depths has lived to roar and rampage again and the scene has never been in a happier or healthier state. But don't be deceived. Metal never really went away. In fact, its current fortitude stems entirely from the bands that never surrendered those brave, liquor-soaked men whose total disregard for the vagaries of fashion and finance kept them glued to the grindstone through metal's mainstream wilderness years. Now, as seems wholly fitting, the greatest of these are finally reaping their rewards and hitting new creative peaks as they surge unstoppably onwards and upwards. And, as it was in the beginning, so shall it be in 2008....

Just as the gravel-lined, turd-stained streets of urban England gave heavy metal to the world back in the late '60s, so that small country with the big voice continues to be the place where the world's finest dark metal band rest their weary, alcohol-ravaged heads after another sonic killing spree.

Throughout the '90s, Cradle of Filth - led by vocalist, lyricist and crypt-crawling master of ceremonies Dani Filth - beavered tirelessly away, producing a series of peerless extreme metal classics that drew from an endless, dizzying array of inspirations and influences while always maintaining that instantly recognisable heart of filthy darkness. The brutal and brief Vempire mini-album and the lustrous, lascivious Dusk & Her Embrace (both 1996) began to reveal the band's great sonic range. Later taking into account the slithering concept piece Cruelty & The Beast (1998) and the Clive Barker-inspired Midian (2000) - not to mention their excursions into the visual realm of film and promo - the Cradle Of Filth sound showed itself to be a many-headed creature. It was one that took delight in confounding both the purists and the critics who continually assailed the band's motives and creativity even as their fan base expanded and their status soared. With a line-up that seemed to be constantly changing - thanks, perhaps, to the cobweb-encrusted revolving door that rumours suggest marked the entrance to the band's rehearsal space during this period - the music was never allowed to stagnate fresh blood and its revitalising effects remained a permanent weapon in the boys' macabre arsenal...

And so to 2007, where Cradle Of Filth find themselves in the enviable position of being in a league and class of their own. Having long since outstripped the achievements of their one-time contemporaries, the band is now firmly entrenched in a rich vein of form. The current line-up of Dani Filth, guitarists Paul Allender and Charles Hedger, bassist Dave Pybus, Rosie Smith ..boards, female vocals Sarah Jezebel Deva and drummer Martin Skaroupka is the most solid and powerful in the band's career and Thornography is the resounding, conclusive proof. With songs as brutish, bombastic and diverse as "Libertina Grimm," "Tonight In Flames," "Cemetery & Sundown," "I Am The Thorn," "The Byronic Man" (featuring HIM's Ville Valo on guest vocals) and a deranged cover of Heaven 17's '80s pop gem "Temptation," the world's biggest and best extreme metal band have never sounded so exhilarating, so vital, so venomous.

Louder, harder, faster, heavier, darker, catchier - the unstoppable force that is Cradle Of Filth slithers menacingly forward, crushing the opposition and striking warped, blackened glee into the hearts of misanthropes and malevolents the world over.....
