Chthonic Kick Off Tour With Satyricon, Bleeding Through
October 1, 2009
Taiwanese metallers Chthonic just kicked off their United States tour in support of their new album 'Mirror of Retribution'. The tour features Satyricon, Bleeding Through and Toxic Holocaust and runs through October 27th in Montreal, Quebec.

Bassist Doris Yeh comments: “After 2 years, we finally have our new album ‘Mirror of Retribution’ out on Spinefarm Records, and this is our second North American tour. We're very excited to see the fans here, and we just met the members of Bleeding Through, they're very nice people, but including the members of the band and staff, there will be a total 15 people on the bus!! Whew! That will be a huge family on the bus!”

Doris
continues: “This tour will be an awesome one, and the fans will kill themselves if they miss the show!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Chthonic
is touring to support their latest release, 'Mirror of Retribution', which is in stores now on Spinefarm Records. After years of controversy surrounding how to classify Chthonic, the band has clearly asserted themselves on 'Mirror of Retribution'. There is no proper label for the type of dark, melodic, extremely heavy sound the band conveys on their latest release. This sound conveys the deep sadness and despair from old Eastern mythos as well as the unforgivable wrath from the history that Taiwan has experienced.

Satyricon Prepare For North American Headline Tour
September 2, 2009
Highly influential extreme metal band, Satyricon, is set to headline a 24-city North American tour which begins on September 25th in Baltimore, MD. The revered Norwegian outfit will also release a special edition 2-CD version of its critically acclaimed latest album, 'The Age of Nero'.

The bonus material on this special 'The Age of Nero' package has never been available in North America before. Featuring 8 live and rare recordings, this package is a must-have for Satyricon fans.

Over the course of its distinguished career, Satyricon has been widely recognized for its distinctive sound as well as its contributions to the genre. The band won the Norwegian Indie Awards’ ”Alarm” for ”Best Live Act” in 2000, and in 2002, won the Norwegian Grammy for ”Best Metal Album” for 'Volcano', in addition to Alarm Awards for ”Metal Album of the Year” and ”Song of the Year” (for their track ”Fuel for Hatred”). Satyricon also won an Oslo Award for “Best Overall Album” that year. In 2006, Satyricon won the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Award for "Best Underground Act" as well as the "International Metal Album of the Year" honor at the Danish Music Awards for its album 'Now, Diabolical'.

When asked about the upcoming tour, vocalist/guitarist Satyr states, "Finally…The way everyone greeted us in the states and Canada during our run in Jan, Feb and March, it was obvious that we needed to come back as soon as possible. The reception we got every night, all the conversations we had after the shows with everyone who had been waiting for us to make it over...it was given that it was never a question of if, just when. For the most part we are focusing on coming back to the same cities as we visited in the winter, so that you can see the full Satyricon show that you got a taste of a few months back. There are also some cities in there where we will be visiting for the first time. It's a quite diverse line-up with support coming from Bleeding Through (U.S.), Chthonic (TAI) and Toxic Holocaust (U.S.) (Toxic Holocaust from 9/25-10/10). We need your support!”

New Chthonic Album Details, Release Date Announced
June 3, 2009
Taiwan is a country where history and folklore work very much hand in hand, and both of these elements are central to the latest studio album from that country’s premier metal outfit, Chthonic (pronounced ‘Thonic’). 'Mirror of Retribution' will be released August 10 on Spinefarm Records UK. Check out the artwork below.

Formed in 1995, five-piece set-up Chthonic (a name deriving from a Greek word signifying spirits of the underworld) have delivered an 11-track body of work that touches on both the spirit and mortal worlds, with loss of national identity and the sometimes turbulent history of their homeland recurring themes.

With Anthrax guitarist Rob Caggiano at the production & mixing helm, ‘Mirror Of Retribution’ sees the award-winning musicians further developing a style that started with the ’99 album ‘Where The Ancestors’ Souls Gathered’, blending full-on metal of the darker persuasion with traditional Taiwanese instruments such as two-string violin, the hena.

“The story behind this album combines true historical fact with an ancient myth of hell,” explains bassist and band spokesperson Doris Yeh. “Amongst other things, we make reference to the famous ‘228 Massacre’, which was the biggest ever massacre in Taiwanese history. Tens of thousands of Taiwanese were killed by the Chinese army. The final battle of the event occurred in the middle of Taiwan, where 40 local militia attempted to resist 2,500 soldiers from the Chinese army. In the end, the militia lost their lives near the Sing-Ling Temple.

“Musically, we tried to move the band to a whole new level,” continues Doris. “In the past, we’ve been described in various ways, as ‘symphonic black metal’ or ‘melodic death’, the word ‘folk’ has also been applied at times, but this was our chance to establish a new place for ourselves in the extreme metal genre…”

Never ones to shy away from a just cause, Chthonic – in particular frontman Freddy Lim – have been consistently active on the political front at home, whilst away from their hometown of Taipei they have appeared at the Wacken Festival in Germany and toured as part of the Ozzfest in the US, the first Asian extreme metal band to make such a mark.

In related news, On July 11th 2009, Chthonic will be the only metal band to appear at a Free Tibet concert in the Xinyi district of Taipei; Freddy Lim & Chthonic were also involved in organising the 2003 Free Tibet concert in Taipei – an event that was attended by the Beastie Boys amongst many other artists. Freddy recently visited the Dalai Lama in India to discuss the 2009 concert.

CHTHONIC is derived from the Greek god of the underworld with the phonetic translation into Mandarin as Shan-ling.

CHTHONIC seeks to bring ancient legends and myth into the modern era. There is much sadness in this eastern island of Taiwan, especially some of Taiwan's lost history which extends back 1,000 years but was destroyed as Han Chinese came to the island 500 years ago. The arrival of this group subjugated native and aboriginal culture to the margins. Nearly 1,000 years of history disappeared as quickly as smoke and fire. With every spirit there are taboos, tales, and traditions. CHTHONIC seeks to resurrect these old spirits and legends, drawing inspiration and reviving these myths, as well as start building new legends.

Formed in 1995, CHTHONIC has recorded four albums. The first album, Where the Ancestors' Souls Gathered, describes a journey across the sea, with the "Black Water Ditch" referring to the Straits of Taiwan, and the difficult and daring passage from China to Taiwan. The group's second album, 9th Empyrean, deals with the subject of "Mother Isle Disintegrated, Aboriginal Gods Enthroned" or the epic battle between Chinese Han spirits and the spirit gods of Taiwan's aboriginal people. The third album, Relentless Recurrence, opens with percussion instruments, creating a cacophony to tell the story of local demon Na-Tao Ji and his story of revenge, transcending mortal limits, and releasing souls from purgatory.

After three year waiting, Seediqbale, the latest album from Chthonic, is full of lament, tragically heroic, and still gloomy. Chthonic's music tells the Taiwan true-history Wushe event and tragic hero Monarudao.

The Taiwan Seediq tribe, which live high in Mount Wushe, was fabled to be born from the fusion of big rocks and giant trees a thousand years ago. Only clansman that have passed the severe trial can be tattooed on the face, a mark for clansman to cross the rainbow bridge to join the ancient souls and receive internal life. In 1895 A.D., the Japanese started colonial governing Taiwan and banned the Seediq's traditional culture, which lasted a thousand years. Monarudao, the chief of the proper, led his people to fight against the Japanese soldiers, and begins this tragically and heroic story.

CHTHONIC's melodies can be characterized as extreme metal with a central inspiration and folklore coming from the black metal movement. CHTHONIC uses the traditional Oriental stringed instrument er-hu, which can be compared to an eastern violin. The sound of the er-hu is one of grief and sorrow, which CHTHONIC accompanies with heavy drums and guitar strings blending into harmony. The music flows with the tempo of ancient mythology, and often, through lyrics, conveys an abbreviated version of a traditional myth or legend. Freddy Lin, lead vocalist, uses his voice to tear and rip melodies, using both ancient and modern language and energy, which mix easily with the music. The music swings from cool despair to the heat of shock and anger. By wavering between these emotions, CHTHONIC is unparalleled in the world of black metal song composition.

Corpse paint is not the monopoly of the Scandinavian metal bands. It also originates from the "Eight Generals", who appear in religious parades based on Taiwanese folklore. When these deities wear corpse paint, they are empowered with the eight Taoist spirits to be the judge of good and evil. The corpse paint encounter of some Scandinavian black metal bands reminded Chthonic of the Taiwanese "Eight Generals". Therefore, Chthonic gradually incorporates their corpse paint with the influence of the "Eight Generals", such as the reverse hook emphasis on the corners of the mouth, etc.

CHTHONIC was awarded "Best Rock Group" at the 14th Golden Music Awards, the Eastern Asian equivalent of a Grammy. The award was presented to the band by none other than the country's President Chen Shui-bian.
