Carson Slovak stretched his arm outward across the floor of his Philadelphia apartment, and handed a yellow legal pad to Mike Coasey. The two had been writing and recording music in this room for days, collaborating, scribbling and agonizing over words and riffs and melodies. Mike reached out to grab the pad, looked to Carson, and now the project had a name. ARMSBENDBACK began in this apartment, with these two musicians, and in many ways the spirit and inspiration of the project has never left. "When Mike moved in," says guitarist and songwriter Slovak, "it was like pouring cement into a creative void that had frustrated me since I started recording my own music. Things clicked." Slovak had been writing instrumental guitar pieces for months; sprawling, inspired works, born of his affection for brutal, angular guitar bursts set against richly textured harmonic explorations. When Mike began setting lyrics and vocal melodies to these compositions, the songs of ArmsBendBack began to immediately take form. Using their collected instruments and a cheap ProTools setup, the two began recording the new songs immediately. "Soon, we were both walking to work everyday with our headphones on," says Slovak, "repeatedly blasting our own music, listening carefully for tiny imperfections in the mix." It wasn't long before these songs made it into the hands of Slovak's longtime friend Chad Taylor, guitarist for the rock band LIVE. He responded immediately to the furious and passionate power of their music. Two weeks later, with Taylor now on board as their producer, Slovak and Coasey traveled to Chicago and San Francisco to record the five songs that would become their first EP, "Even Though I'll Hurt You." Taylor produced the EP, and Karl Derfler (NO DOUBT, DAVE MATTHEWS BAND, STROKE 9) recorded and mixed. Upon returning to Philadelphia, they quickly found the instrumental talent needed to complete the band, adding Brad Sloan on bass and Andrew Kegerise on drums. ArmsBendBack have since played shows throughout the East Coast, headlining clubs from Boston to North Carolina, performing at HellFest and Vans Warped Tour, and sharing the stage with such bands as LIVE, A STATIC LULLABY, and STAGE. They signed their first recording agreement with Trustkill Records, and recently finished their first full-length album for the label, entitled "The Waiting Room", set to be released October 7th. Now, the members of ArmsBendBack are poised and ready to unleash their musical assault on the world. "A lot has happened since the night in that Philadelphia apartment," says Slovak. "We've refined our sound to the point that it's something different, something new. The long recording sessions, the hours of work and dedication and the pure, raw energy of the music itself, coalesce into the single phrase that found its way onto the yellow legal pad that night: ARMSBENDBACK."
